Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping With Nothing Plugged In?

A breaker can trip with “nothing plugged in” due to wiring or device faults on the circuit. Common causes include a short to ground, a loose connection, a failing breaker, or a hardwired load like lights, a furnace, or a GFCI/AFCI issue. Shared outlets you forgot about may still feed something. Moisture in exterior boxes can also trip GFCI/AFCI.

Quick checks:

  • Identify what the breaker feeds.
  • Reset once.
  • Inspect GFCI/AFCI buttons and look for warm outlets or burning smell.
  • Schedule professional testing.
